About Camp Discovery
A Tennessee Junior Chamber / Tennessee Jaycee Foundation project, this summer camping facility is designed specifically for mentally and physically challenged individuals. The 186 acre camp is nestled in the rolling hills surrounding the Flynn’s Lick Creek area of Cordell Hull Lake in Jackson County, Tennessee. It is approximately midway between Nashville and Knoxville. This wonder of work began 20 years ago as a project of the Tennessee Jaycees and the Tennessee Jaycee Foundation, Inc.

The objective of Camp Discovery is to provide an opportunity for mentally & physically challenged persons (ages seven and older) to develop socially, physically, and emotionally. This is accomplished by giving them an opportunity to participate in supervised outdoor recreational activities with a supportive environment. Camp Discovery brings smiles, creates lasting friendships, rewards achievement, promotes new skills and dissolves old prejudices.

We recognize the need for activities to help each individual develop motor skills, install a confidence in social interaction and communication, improve physical control and awaken latent abilities. The facilities at Camp Discovery include a staffed infirmary, Caretaker’s residence, multi-activity barn, covered pavilion, accessible pool and lakeside bridge. The facilities can accommodate up to 90 campers each week. The week begins on a Sunday afternoon and concludes on Friday afternoon. Activities that take place weekly include: Camp Olympics, swimming, nature walks, arts & crafts, bonfires, fishing, movies, music and dancing. All programming activities are closely supervised by our trained Camp Directors.

Camp Discovery is proud to have earned the distinction of being accredited by the American Camping Association. This association was developed exclusively for the camping industry and focuses on program quality, health and safety issues. The ACA also requires us to review ever facet of our operation periodically. The camp’s facilities, programming and supervision are all designed to insure each camper receives a safe and rewarding experience. The counselor-camper ratio will be as close to a one to three, as possible.

Jaycee Chapters from across the state of Tennessee often visit to provide parties, ice cream and snacks, fireworks and other forms of entertainment. These parties are enjoyed by the campers and staff and also allow the Jaycee members to see the direct impact of their hard work and financial support.
